ConCom Meeting, July 20th, 2pm - Milford, MA (Posted on behalf of Jill Eastlake, A'09 Con Chair)
The next Arisia '09 Con Comm meeting is a party at my place on Sunday, July 20, at 2 pm (and runs until 9pm). Like all Arisia ConCom meetings, this is open to everyone involved with Arisia, and anyone who might be interested in finding out more about Arisia.
Food: We will have a grill with hot dogs and hamburgers and some cheese. Perhaps even some chicken.
We have a popcorn machine ready and able to do its thing.
Feel free to bring food for a potluck to share with others.
Games: Rick has volunteered to bring his Guitar Hero setup. There's a new PS3 in my living room (not compatible with old PS2 games). It is available for use.
If the weather is good, the backyard had plenty of room for croquet, badminton, bocce, .... If someone has game you'd like to play, please bring it. There's even room for a trebuchet, but please point it away from the house.
Inside there's there are a couple of large tables with plenty of room for games.
Transportation: We live in Milford, just outside of 495. There is a commuter train line that goes to 495/Forge Village from in town. Rides will be available from the train station.
Also, Carpooling is encouraged (if you need a ride, please let us know).
Remember to bring your family and friends. Let them see what you do in your spare time, for fun. Maybe they'd like to help? Maybe they'd just like to see the kind of people you hang out with in January at a hotel when it's likely to snow.
The Northern Lights Costumers' Guild is also meeting that day at my house starting at 10 am with breakfast. Arisians are welcome to come early, and RSVP to make sure there's enough breakfast. |

Blood Drive extended to Sunday! Thanks to the support of the Con Chair, the ConCom, the Naughty Nurses, and newcomers the Children's Hospital Bloodmobile, we'll be doubling the opportunities for those so inclined to donate blood at Arisia 2009. In addition to our regular and enthusiastic crew from MGH on Saturday, we'll have newbies to impress on Sunday. I've been trying to arrange this for years in response to many requests, so I very much hope to hear from those wanting to help make both days a success. Don't delay! I'll be happy to schedule your appointment any day! Current Mood: hopefulCurrent Music: In These Shoes? - Kirsty MacColl |

The things meme The things meme Three things that I've done that I don't think other people have done: 1. Sung a karaoke version of "I'm too sexy" on stage as part of a contest with a friend. A woman threw an article of clothing at me. She threw a flannel shirt, under which she was wearing a heavy t-shirt. 2. I've been asked to write slash fiction involving Michael Jordon and Spock. By two different women, In the same year, Only one of whom I was romantically or sexually involved with. 3. I befriend a woman who was referred to as "She who must not be named" (SWMNBN) by the many women who were dating her exes. My friends were worried that I would end up another one of her shattered, discarded conquests. What they didn't know was that a couple of years before I'd been put through a hellish wringer by a woman who was far better at manipulating people than SWMNBN. As a result SWMNBN's attempts at manipulation were an object of entertainment as opposed to something that might actually impact my feelings. Baitcon +/- - Got a later start than intended + That was partly because ariesd went out to purchase a waterproof luggage sack for the roof, which was good because... - ...while Trowa was driving on Soldiers Field Rd., the apocalyptic lightning, wind, and rain suddenly descended upon us, necessitating a switch in drivers and causing lots of water to cascade down the tiedown straps into the car cabin - Almost got into an accident while trying to find entrance to parking garage at Newton Corner + Found garage entrance, stopped for lunch while the rain did its thing + Rest of drive was uneventful - Tried to get Epi-Pen for Aries at CVS in Pittsfield after setting up, but were denied + Managed to get the Epi-Pen the next day + Hugged many friends (including lots of hugs for kimberlogic!) - Never enough time to see and talk to everyone like I want to - Certain people who couldn't make it were very much missed + Trowa and I made many tasty ice cream and sorbet flavors (lemon curd, lemon curd w/blueberry swirl, Spicy Brains, jasmine green tea-ginger, ginger sorbet, pear-ginger sorbet, Wafer Thin Mint, honey lavender, lavender cosmo sorbet) + So much good ice cream, mmmmmm (even if that much dairy at once is a bit rough on the innards) + Quality time with quality sweeties! - Missed the taiko drumming concert, which I really would have liked to hear + Taught Aries to contra dance (one of us! one of us!) - Got bitten by bugs despite bug spray - Had sudden, random, somewhat disturbing contact dermatitis break out on both forearms late Saturday night, was moderately freaked out, still don't know what caused it + Two Benadryl caplets successfully resolved the issue + Nest of baby robins with flip-top heads under the roof of the food-serving pavilion + Helped with ice cream clue-giving and dishwashing + Snapped some interesting (I hope) photos and a video or two + Didn't rain all that much during the actual event after all + Stayed afterward to have dinner with the BCC crew It was a wonderful, relaxing time. Thank you to all who made it happen and all who made it a good weekend by being there. Current Mood: tired, but good |

First day in daycare Today is Caleb's first day in daycare and Whuffle's first day back at work. Needless to say, our home has been a big bucket of drama, exacerbated by both of us being exhausted and borderline incoherent thanks to our lack of sleep during Baitcon. Caleb is so far the one handling this the best. The odds are good he'll just enjoy spending the day looking at new people and other babies. We've been targeting 10:00 to 11:00 as our bed time. This has meant we've been getting to bed around an hour or more after that. Given the fact that my eyes hurt and I see swirling spots when I close them, I think going to bed around 8:00 to 9:00 tonight is in order, followed by 9:00 being the new target bed time. My very first Baitcon was absolutely marvelous. I had a wonderful time just hanging out for the weekend. As someone who helps organize a similar event elsewhere, I was tremendously impressed with the amenities of the campsite and the organizational abilities of the folks running this lovely event. Many kudos to everyone who made this weekend work, it was a very good thing for me to relax with many kind folk that I never seem to get caught up with in real life. And I think I've convinced sebastian_tombs to join us next year as well. Just need to find a better dogsitting situation. Thanks JB and Kimberly for letting me into this wonderful event!!! Many joyous wishes upon your house! Crossposted to baitcon Current Mood: content |

home again, home again Back from Baitcon. Adventures were had, ice cream was made and eaten, friends were hugged, sweeties were smooched, bug bites and contact allergic reactions were had, contras were danced, dishes were washed, baby robins were espied, and even more ice cream was eaten. More later. Fall down go boom now. Current Mood: sleepy |

Two Women I heard this poem read aloud by two women in Portuguese and English at an event sponsored by the Brazilian Women's Group of Greater Boston recently. It was a powerful experience, and I asked them for the English version. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Two Women (This poem was written by a working class Chilean woman in 1973, shortly after Chile's socialist president, Salvador Allende, was overthrown. A U.S. missionary translated the work and brought it with her when she was forced to leave Chile.) I am a woman.I am a woman. I am a woman born of a woman whose man owned a factory.I am a woman born of a woman whose man labored in a factory. I am a woman whose man wore silk suits, who constantly watched his weight.I am a woman whose man wore tattered clothing, whose heart was constantly strangled by hunger. I am a woman who watched two babies grow into beautiful children.I am a woman who watched two babies die because there was no milk. I am a woman who watched twins grow into popular college students with summers abroad.I am a woman who watched three children grow, but with bellies stretched from no food. But then there was a man;But then there was a man; And he talked about the peasants getting richer by my family getting poorer. And he told me of days that would be better and he made the days better. Ka-BOOM House across the street is getting roofed today. That thunderstorm is directly over my neighborhood. ....I have never seen anyone descend three stories of aluminum ladders that fast in my life. And it was obviously the crew chief who was still up there tying things down ten minutes after the first big crash. Dude....... Current Mood: distressedCurrent Music: Batonga -- Angelique Kidjo |

fleurs! ariesd dropped by my office this afternoon and brought me purple and yellow irises. :) Then we went out and had a nice lunch together. Both these things improved my day immeasurably, as it had begun with oversleeping and the subsequent discovery that I had completely spaced that even-side street sweeping was today, resulting in a $50 ticket. made tonight for Baitcon Trowa and I made lime curd for key lime pie ice cream. OMG lime curd! So yummy! He also made watermelon-sake sorbet mix and jasmine green tea-ginger ice cream mix. And, with that, the endeavors in quiescently frozen comestible mixes are now complete. Now...packing. Heh. Ha. Hee hee. BWAHAHAHAHA*gasp*HAHAHAHA*wheeze*HAHAHA. sumo! Another in the Japan video series. This is the final bout of the first day of the sumo tournament we attended. I love watching sumo, even when I don't always quite understand what's going on. I especially love the way they stare, suddenly decide that the planets aren't correctly aligned or something, and abruptly retreat to their corners. In most of the bouts we saw, more time was spent psyching each other out than actually wrestling. :) (The part that gets cut off at the end is me saying, "I think we just saw the sumo version of a hat trick!") Book Meme From tamidonThe Big Read* reckons that the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books they've printed. Well let's see. 1) Look at the list and bold those you have read. 2) Italicize those you intend to read. 3) Underline the books you LOVE. 4) Reprint this list in your own LJ so we can try and track down these people who've only read 6 and force books upon them ;-) 1. Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen 2. The Lord of the Rings - J.R.R. Tolkien3. Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte 4. Harry Potter series - J.K. Rowling5. To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee6. made tonight for Baitcon misia's lemon curd, recommended by rikibethBlueberry sauce for lemon curd-blueberry swirl ice cream Pear puree for ginger-pear sorbet I might turn the lemon curd into ice cream mix right now, while it's still warm. (ETA: Actually, I did end up getting inspired and I made the mix, which meant I didn't get to bed until 3:00. Oops. But hey, it's done!) Damn, that stuff is good. I will definitely be making that again. (Trowa had a fabulous idea of using it in place of chocolate to make lemon s'mores...like a lemon meringue pie in convenient sandwich form!) Made Sunday: 2 liters of ginger syrup for ginger-lime, ginger-pear, and jasmine-ginger sorbets. Made last week: Butternut-amaretti ice cream. Still to make at Baitcon, since they don't require cooking: Wafer Thin Mint and snickerdoodle ice cream. NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM Current Mood: nom nom nom |
